What is an NSSO Enumerator?

  • Also called Field Investigator / Survey Enumerator
  • Works under NSSO (now part of National Statistical Office – NSO)
  • Primary role: collect real-world socio-economic data from households & businesses

Responsibilities

  • Field Data Collection (Main Job)
    • Visit households, shops, farms, enterprises
    • Conduct face-to-face interviews
    • Fill survey schedules (digital/tablet or paper)
  • 👉 Surveys include:
    • Employment / unemployment
    • Consumer expenditure
    • Health, education, MSME data
  •  Interaction with Public

    • Explain purpose of survey to respondents
    • Build trust and ensure cooperation
    • Maintain confidentiality of data

Must Have

  • Data Recording & Accuracy
    • Record answers accurately and completely
    • Cross-check responses before submission
    • Maintain field notes and observations
  • Extensive travel within assigned area (urban + rural)
  • In Bangalore region:
    • Can include nearby districts in Karnataka
  • Daily field visits are common

Reporting

  • Submit daily/weekly progress reports
  • Report issues to:
    • Field Officer
    • Supervisor

    • Basic statistics understanding
    • Data collection methods
    • Mobile/tablet usage

    • Communication (local language important – Kannada in Bangalore)
    • Patience (dealing with respondents)
